Valentino and Meryl Streep are NBFs. That's New Best Friends. The Italian designer will make a cameo appearance in the film of The Devil Wears Prada alongside Streep, who plays a fictional fashion editor. "I was so honoured to be on the screen with a lady who was nominated for the Oscar 13 times," Valentino, who has not read the book, told WWD. "I met Ms Streep years ago in Los Angeles. She is a wonderful lady – so intelligent and cultivated. She is a great, great, great artist, a sensational actress." Streep will join the love-in tonight when she presents the designer with the Superstar award at the Fashion Group International Night of Stars in New York tonight. "I am very happy," the 73-year-old style maker went on. "I have been in this industry for many decades. I love America. It's always fantastic when people still appreciate your work. It gives me the kick to go on and do my best." Valentino, whose ambition is always to "make women look the best as possible", has one gripe about his distinguished career, however. He disapproves of being labelled just a designer for the red carpet set, or for ladies who lunch. "It's never just for people who lunch at La Grenouille," he griped.
