O Fiasco de Britney nos VMA's

After weeks of buzz, Britney Spears kicked off Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms in Las Vegas in a sparkly bra and briefs with a club-ready performance of her latest song "Gimme More."

The singer, who reportedly worked with illusionist Criss Angel on the act, lip-synched to the song as women cavorted on stripper poles amid a flashy red background. The song comes in advance of Spears' as-yet-untitled record due in stores Nov. 13.

The pop star has a history of dramatic performances at the VMAs – including kissing Madonna and dancing with a live snake – but this year's performance seemed more low-key and certainly less eye-popping.

And at least one review was in almost immediately. Following Spears's performance, comedian Sarah Silverman offered her sarcastic take. "Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone," Silverman said. "Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."

Later, backstage hip-hop star Akon offered his reaction to Spears's performance, telling PEOPLE: "That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her." Similarly, Common told PEOPLE about Spears: "I think it didn't seem like she wanted to be there. There wasn't any spark, it didn't feel like life was there." Before the show, many artists weighed in on Spears's comeback.

During MTV's official pre-show, Mary J. Blige wished the beleaguered pop star all the best. "I absolutely think Britney could make the comeback," Blige said on the telecast. "Someone who's been through as much as she's been through – you just want her to win. I know I want her to win."

Morreu Luciano Pavarotti

O tenor italiano Luciano Pavarotti, 71 anos, morreu hoje de madrugada em sua casa, na cidade de Modena, Itália, em consequência de um cancro no pâncreas, anunciou a agência noticiosa Ansa.
Operado em Julho do ano passado a um tumor no pâncreas, Pavarotti tinha sido hospitalizado em Agosto, mas nas últimas semanas estava em casa, rodeado da família.

O agravamento súbito do estado de saúde do cantor lírico tinha sido noticiado ontem à noite pelos meios de comunicação social italianos, acabando por falecer durante a madrugada, de acordo com a Ansa.A notícia da morte espalhou-se rapidamente em Modena e as autoridades policiais estabeleceram um cordão de segurança em torno da casa do tenor, onde já se encontra um veículo funerário, referiu a cadeia de televisão RAI.

Devido a um "estado febril", Pavarotti tinha sido hospitalizado em Modena a 8 de Agosto, regressando a casa no dia 25 para aí prosseguir a convalescença.Uma operação às costas, no início do ano passado, seguida da intervenção cirúrgica ao pâncreas, em Julho, tinham obrigado o tenor a cancelar uma digressão de despedida com 40 concertos pelo mundo inteiro que havia iniciado em Maio de 2004.

Pavarotti não era visto em público há vários meses, embora, depois da operação de Julho do ano passado, tivesse anunciado a sua disposição de retomar a digressão de despedida, no início deste ano, mas não chegou a concretizar o seu desejo.

Halle Berry está grávida

Halle Berry is expecting her first child. "Yes, I am three months pregnant," the Oscar winner told Access Hollywood on Tuesday. "Gabriel and I are beyond excited and I've waited a long time for this moment in my life." Berry, 41, and her boyfriend, 32-year-old model Gabriel Aubry, met shooting a Versace ad in Los Angeles in November 2005 and first stepped out publicly three months later at the February opening of a Versace boutique in New York City. Earlier this year, Berry told InStyle, "I definitely want children. Very much."

In terms of what kind of parent she'll be, she said. "I want my kids to realize it's only through hard work that any success or real joy comes. It's not about money; it's the intangible rewards – having integrity and doing what you say you're going to do." Asked about marriage, Berry, who has been married twice, told the magazine that she had no plans to tie the knot again. "I will never, never get married again," she said. "Actually, it's just that now I've come to a place where I think two people can share their lives without the ring, without the piece of paper." In February, a friend of Aubry's told PEOPLE about the couple: "They are so smitten."

Valentino reforma-se

Celebrating his 45th Anniversary in Rome this July with a blow-out weekend of events — (A gala at the Temple of Venus one night! Fireworks set off from the Colosseum the next!) — Valentino admitted, “It was a moment that will be impossible to repeat.”
And so, despite pleas from anxious fashionistas around the globe, Valentino announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“At this time, I have decided that is the perfect moment to say adieu to the world of fashion,” the designer, 74, said in a statement released to PEOPLE.
“As the English say, I would like to leave the party when it is still full.” The couturier, who has dressed everyone from Sophia Loren to Julia Roberts, will design one last ready-to-wear collection, to be shown during Paris fashion week in October, and a final haute couture collection, scheduled for January. The label will continue under new design leadership. No doubt Valentino’s retirement will be a source of grief for many red carpet stars. “I want him to continue designing for 100 more years!” Anne Hathaway told PEOPLE during the festivities in Rome in July, calling his clothes, “elegant, whimsical and very powerful.” Uma Thurman agreed, telling PEOPLE that “when I wear his clothes, I feel privileged.” So, incidentally, did Valentino. “I have been very lucky to be able to do what I have loved all my life,” he said. “There can be few greater gifts than that.”
